Shotehra Rice, Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, QC
Shotehra Rice is a member of the Kahnawake Mohawk Territory, and has resided there all his life. Upon completion of his collegial studies in 2010, he enrolled at Concordia University, studying History and Political Science. After attending the 2nd annual First Nations Youth Forum in August 2012, Shotehra was inspired to dedicate more personal time and effort toward cultivating greater youth participation in his community; encouraging youth to pursue post-secondary education; re-establishing a place for youth to meet and discuss current social, political and economic issues on his reserve; and establishing working relationships with the surrounding communicates. In the fall of 2012, he took a leave from his University studies, and set out to realize his vision. Through his volunteer works advocating on behalf of Kahnawake youth, pushing for greater youth input and consultation in the decisions that will affect their future, Shotehra feels he has made a difference in his community. At present, he serves as President of the Kahnawake Youth Forum; the Youth Representative for the Kahnawake Youth Center’s Board of Directors; and the Aboriginal Representative on the Regional Youth Forum’s Management Committee and Governing Board. Working as a prep cook at a local Aboriginal-owned catering company, Rice is passionate about food, and has enrolled at St. Pius X Culinary Institute. He begins his studies in fall 2013. Rice is wholeheartedly dedicated to participating in and fostering the Aboriginal youth movement that he feels is sweeping across Canada. Through his personal, academic and extracurricular success and involvement, Rice hopes to serve as a positive role model, and inspire Aboriginal youth to "be the change”.Coming Soon.
